Austrian weather in May/June

We're thinking of booking a holiday to Austria for our honeymoon next year. We are hoping to get married on the 24th of May then going there a few days later and staying for 10 - 14 days.

Can anyone give us any indication of what sort of weather to expect?

If Euro 2008 is anything to go by then

Rain, Thunder & Lightning (So probably good honeymoon weather)

or maybe that was just a freak!

I am going in August with my fingers crossed

I booked through lastminute.com, they were selling off late deals on behalf of Inghams for July & August. I am not sure if they have September deals yet.
  • Where abouts in Austria are you going?
Generally May and June are good times to visit (though at somepoint in may they have a week of flys everywhere). August is the worst time for rain. However in May and June you are unlikely to get a whole week free of rain so take an umbrella. They're usually big downpours with thunder (often in the evening) but over pretty quickly.

Lovely country Austria - I worked there for 2 years

We're thinking of booking for this monther (July) and the best we've seen have been through crystallakes.co.uk - they give a £30pp discount off the quoted price too. Does anyone know of anywhere that is better as we've not booked yet?

We've not really made any decisions yet, possibly in the mountains in the Tirol though.

Are there any areas that are less rainy than others?

  • I wouldn't worry too much about the rain. You can still do lots when it rains - just make sure you take a kagool and umbrella. I like St. Johan (im Tirol), Zell am See, Soll, Kaprun, Ellmau. Depends whether you want a small place with walking, or a bigger place with more sightseeing.
  • Towards Graz it should be nice weather around that time. I spent a year living close to Salzburg and the weather was changeable during that time, but it is known for that type of weather.
If you go in to the alpes my guess is that it would be sunny but it could still be quite cool.
Overall I wouldn't say its safe to assume the weather will be good at that time of year, as previously mentioned its better to pack wet weather gear if you are set on going to Austria.
If its the warm weather you are after then try Croatia, Slovenia or Italy.
