Hi All,
I looking at going to Majorca in September for a week. Does anyone have any recommendations as to where to stay? I am quite flexible as will probably hire a car.
Thanks
Matt

It depends what you are looking for from the holiday resort.
I wouldn't fancy Magaluf or Palma Nova, as I'm not into loud parties and nightclubs.
I didn't like Alcudia as it was too big and touristy for me, and I didn't like Callas de Mallorca as it's a man made resort and again too touristy.
I loved Cala D'Or as it was less touristy. It had decent restaurants, no nightclubs and shops selling decent goods rather than the usual tourist tat. The marina is fabulous with some serious money yachts in. Nice to have a meal overlooking it and daydream
Soller and Puerto Pollensa are lovely too. They are both quieter like Cala D'Or and not too touristy. I've only been to both on day trips and not stopped there, but I would consider a holiday in either resort. Here I go again on my own....0 -
very clean, quietish resort, only drawback is full of germans! so u really do have to fight for the sunbeds!
we stayed at the cala millor playa hotel, excellent, just across from the beach.
enjoy!

I'd second Cala D'Or. I stayed at the Marina Skorpios Hotel with my parents a few years ago. It was lovely and quiet, with a small beach surrounded by cliffs shared between that hotel and another opposite.0 -
I stayed in C'an Picafort. The hotel was on the beach which was great, and you just had to walk around the corner to reach restaurants, shops and bars along the beach front, was lovely! Its not too loud or touristy..
Its next to Alcudia so not far to go to visit the 'touristy' area, and with a car you can drive to Magaluf to visit the waterparks and more lively areas..\\ Debt Free April 2008 //\\ Single Mummy to 1 boy - 4 years & 5 months old //\\ Last weeks spend: £139.39 - 2 NSDs //0 -
I agree Cala D'or is lovely as is Cala Rajada but that is a mainly German resort too,the Germans are very discerning and demanding though so they only go to the better places.0

My vote would have to go to Puerto Pollensa, a very stylish (in the old fashioned sense) resort with lots of charm. And since you are hiring a car, it is perfectly placed for a day trip up into the heavenly scented pine clad mountains to escape the heat.
Alternatively, you might consider opting for the island of Menorca rather than Majorca. It's quieter and has beaches to die for ... see my photo gallery here ... http://www.pbase.com/davecq/menorca_2003
If you do opt for Menorca, Cala Galdana is the resort to aim for.

Look at brochures. You will see that some are for Majorca, some for Mallorca. These are both the same island, but the two names are used to market it to completely different sets of people. Decide which kind of experience you want, and if you want a Mallorca type experience then don't go near any resorts that feature in a Majorca brochure (and vice versa, of course).0

For the Mallorca sort of clientele, there is Puerto Soller, with hardly any Brits but quite alot of Germans, Spaniards and French. There's a tram to the town of Soller, from where you can get the historic train over the mountains to Palma. you can also do day trips by car to Deya, Valdemossa?? Andraitx ?? - sorry about the spellings. There's a great sea trip around the coast to a famous inlet I forget the name of. It's definitely not a place for those who like to lie on the beach.0

Would recommend the Santa Lucia Hotel in Palma Nova, stayed there about 4/5 years ago, good food, wonderful location although Palma Nova is near Magaluf, close enough to walk the Santa Lucia is far enough away so you cant actually hear it. The only downside was that the entertainment wasnt too good suitable for the elderly. We are off again in a couple of weeks so hope it still lives up to our memories. We always hire a car too, the office was just across the road from the hotel, cant be sure its still there. We love Majorca, Santa Ponsa has panoramic views, Portal Nous is great if you have money, Palma is a beautiful architectural city in fact I cant think of anywhere we didnt enjoy, as we have driven all over the island and this will be our third visit. Have fun wherever you choose.2008£3002009£13002010£15002011£41952012£21942013£1494

I thought palma nova was on the quieter side (is possible) of magalluf?
last time i went with a girlfriend, we went near end of season, and got quite nice rooms in a hotel (jardin or something similar), on hilly outskrt of santa ponca -far western end of the island.
a hndful of the usual Brit pubs nearby, a nice bar restaurant by the beach, but the town was generally peaceful.. not a lot else to do there, so car essential!Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
Sometimes seen lurking on the compers forum :-)0
