New Year's Eve - inspiration needed!

Has anyone got any suggestions for where me and two friends can go for NYE? We'd like to go away for anything from 3 to 7 days, don't mind how far we travel but the snag is it needs to be fairly cheap - under £500 per person if possible. I've been to Prague for NYE and loved it but thought that places like Krackow and Riga might be too similar? I would love to go to the US but think the budget will probably prevent that. Doesn't have to be abroad - if anyone knows any fab cottages or in fact anything at all in this country that would be good too. Basically I just want to pick your brains about any ideas at all, thanks!!

    Hi Cas20
Why not revisit old haunts? The Bay Horse at Unsworth Pole is always welcoming. Or you could try the Knowsley in Bury?

I think you may have to stick with Eastern Europe or stay in the UK. £500 is not a lot these days, flights to NY alone is £300 at the moment and will probably closer to £400 before the new year. Hotel room would be around £70 per night for a OK hotel and £100 a 4* one (much for for a 5*) so that is half of your budget already.

I think Riga would be interesting, failing that Budapest is quite good - never there for NYE though. The only problem is that, as you said, they are very similar places.

How about Amsterdam? I've been there around Christmas and the atmosphere is quite nice - wet and cold though.

Done NYE from Paris to Sydney, it can be over-rated, depends what you want, outside with fireworks or inside with food or drink. So what do you prefer?

Think we would like to be outside with fireworks - seems like Manchester (where I live) is the only major city in the world that won't do them on NYE so it would be something different. Think our budget might be expanding a little now - my friend has got a rather excited at the thought of going to Las Vegas after we watched a few clips on You Tube - oh heck, this could end up being a dear do after all!! Am currently scouring the internet for, well, pretty much anything so we'll see what comes up.
Thanks to all for the responses, keep them coming everyone!!

what about a skiing holiday to lapland, you can get a week there over new year for just over your budget (but still under £600 each), most ski resorts like levi has fireworks on the main slope on new year - very magical, look at crystal ski or inghams

or, what about the pudding club, you can stay there for 4 nights with all meals etc for your budget and it's something different, my friends go there for christmas every other year and they love it

have a look here for some ideas

Edinburgh is fantasic as they have a massive street party but after midnight everything sort of stopped and everyone went onto either private parties or ones that you need tickets for so if you don't know anyone or where to go this could be a problem, however, it was 13 years ago when I was there so maybe things have changed.

as for manchester, thing you may get your fireworks this new year
