  • It sounds a little on the heavy side, but it does depend on a number of factors. If you think he'll do a quality job it may be worth it in the long run. Two and a half weeks labour @ £200 per day is £2600. If he's got a separate electrician then that's another £200, if he's removing the rubbish that's a further cost. Overall, looking at the job on worst case scenario, the price may not be too far off the mark. You're bound to have someone say they've had heating installed in a three bed house for £2.5 but that's based on a combi system which is a lot easier, less time consuming and involves far less materials. I'm guessing he's allowed enough time to finish the job properly, rather than crash it in as fast as he can and then leave certain bits not finished properly, usually the flushing and commissioning checks, and the system balancing.
  • You're welcome, and I couldn't agree more, low cost does not always indicate good value. If the guy's reputation is that good, I would be inclined to chance it.

I lost some work a while back, a biggish system, I specified the system as required by the demands that would be put on it, 3 full bathrooms in a 5 bedroom house and around 15 radiators. I recommended a sealed conventional heating system with an unvented cylinder. It wasn't cheap, somewhere around the £7K mark, and around 3 weeks work for me alone. My electrician who was still doing work there said she had got a company to throw the system in within a week, using a heat-store combi all for around the £4K mark. Now she doesn't get enough hot water to run the three bathrooms simultaneously, or even a bath and another hot tap simultaneously to the level she would like, and was apparently promised, and she apparently bitterly regrets not having me do the work. There are also other problems with corrosion as it would appear they didn't flush or treat the system correctly.

She would have had none of these problems had I carried out the installation. I tried to warn her about the fact that a combi wasn't suitable for this type of property but she seemed sceptical and now has to live with the result.
