We stayed here in Rethymno, Crete

    http://www.frommers.com/destinations/rethymnon/H38480.html for a review.

It was lovely, very friendly and 5 mins walk into town. not on the beach, but again, it was 5 min walk away. Have to disagree with Emma_b, Rethymnon was lovely when we went there 2 years ago. only a few Germans around. we found it better than okay and really enjoyed ourselves.

We booked independently and got a really good deal on the hotel in the middle of August. We also arranged our own trips to Samaria Gorge and Knossos using public transport. Loads of stuff to do there, but you can find lots of quiet places if that's what you like.

First time to Crete, we went to Elound - absolutely gorgeous but a bit expensive due to huge deluxe spa hotels.

This year we stayed near Chania, again absolutely gorgeous - the village we stayed in (Gerani) was basically 1 st with about 5 tavernas and a few shoips. We went into Platanias on the bus for more variety and then took the car to the west coast for some beautiful beaches. The north coast can be a bit choppy for swimming.

Don't go with Kosmar - they kept changing flying times on us - but never by the 12 hours necessary for compensation. In the end we got there late at night and left early morning - effectively losing the last day of hols - not a happy buny!!!

Next year we're getting cheap flights and a car from the airport and just winging it :)

  • Stayed in Roda in Corfu - nice and fairly quiet, not too big, a few bars and disco's but no 18-30's hotels, etc. Stayed in Hotel Aphrodite overlooking the bay - lovely! Would definately go back.

Stayed ina villa between Ag Nik and Elounda in Crete - really nice, would definately go back to Elounda. Ag Nik not as bad as we were led to beleive. The big drawback with Crete is the awful airport at Heraklion.
