Camcorder advice wanted

Having just been told by Jessops that my panasonic mini DV camcorder will probably cost £200  to repair (it needs a better clean than a head cleaning tape can provide) I am looking for a new one. Any tips on which format is the best to buy (or any advice on how to get the current one repaired for less?)
Thanks in anticipation

My school's tech department were looking for new camcorders and we came up with these:

As they use DVD-RWs, you could in theory just rewrite endlessly, until the disc had had enough. It's supposedly quicker to transfer when you use this type of media because you don't have to wait for the whole movie to playback, as you would with a tape. I think they come with memory cards but these wouldn't be able to store much high-quality video, so it would make more sense to get DVD-RWs.0
