We used to get bones from the butchen van that comes around. Pretty sure we just asked if they had any bones for the dog.

We get them every week, just go in and ask the butcher if he has any bones for the dog. Sometimes the ones we get are enormous and the dog has a big grin when he sees them :D
For the female dog, she's very picky, so I put them in the oven for half an hour before she has hers.
Either way, our dogs have beautiful white teeth.
Sometimes I think butcher beileves the bones are for us, there's so much meat on some of them.
And the ones I roast, the smell is amazing. And when I take it out of the oven, it's smells like a Sunday roast :rotfl:
Get beef if you can, not lamb as the bone is a bit splintery, and your dog might choke on the small sharp parts.

NEVER feed your dog cooked bones - they can splinter and cause all manner of internal injuries. Bones should be fed raw, and dogs should be supervised at all times when chewing them.

    Please don't give bones.

Their teeth might be clean, but their bums will be full of sharp splinters of bone.

Raw bones from the butcher are fine - marrow bones will be treasured (maybe a little too much ;)). They are great for the teeth, however, I wouldn't cook any bone to give to the dog. Heat changes the structure of the bone and makes it much more likely to break into sharp splinters which may do internal damage. I like to make the habit of holding the dogs bone while they lick and chew it for a while before giving it to them, as it helps build relationships.

If the bones I get are quite small, I put them in a pan & let them simmer for a couple of hours. Any meat left is then scraped off, add a few handfuls of mixed veg & some pasta or rice & voila--a doggie stew:p If there's not much meat, a bit of offal or cooked chicken gets thrown in too.

The cost can be anything from free to price per kilo & any variation in between, dependant on where you go. It is perfectly acceptable to just ask for doggie bones, & even if you do have the meat off them for yourself, that is your business...in this house tho, pup actively watches what goes in & comes out of the pans around the cooker:D

Well, i went in and asked, I had one. think maybe someone else had been in today. Anyway, max went stupid when he saw what I'd got from town for him. Kept him quiet for an hour or so though. I took it off him when it got quite small, just incase. Don't think he was impressed:rotfl: . However, I think I will make a regular habit of popping in the butchers when downtown from now on. Thanks guys.:T

  • I always ask when I buy meat from the butchers if he can chuck in some bones for the dog. He often goves me a bag with about 8 in which I pop in the freezer till needed. My butcher keeps a stock of sawn up beef bones in the back specifically for dogs!!

I agree with the other posters, raw bones are a good part of a dogs diet and keep them happy and healthy (and avoid a lot of potentially costly teeth problems!) but never feed cooked bones, they can be lethal as the cooking makes them brittle and likely to splinter!

Bones are bad for your Dogs
I hear you saying that all dogs love a good bone, well nobody is saying they don't, but that does not mean they are good for them.
Sadly every year countless numbers of dogs end up in the emergency room from being given bones by their guardians.
    Usually as a treat !
(Don't kill your dog with a bone treat)
The fact is that dogs are omnivores, not carnivores and most dogs cannot tolerate bones.
They can splinter or lodge in the intestinal tract with disastrous results, usually requiring surgery.
They can also get stuck in their mouth or throat, which is just as dangerous.
All bones are bad, including pork, chicken and beef.
    History lesson
We are told that the dogs ancestors hunted for food, killed, eat raw meat and bones. What records don't show is how many became ill? how many died ?

Yes bones can kill a dog, so can many things, including dog treats, sticks, tennis balls, etc..

My dog gets an occasional marrow bone to keep his teeth clean, as recommended by my vet. Obviously I don't leave him unattended with it, but you can't erase all possible risk from life.
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.
