Believe me I'm not trying to make you feel bad about anything - you wouldn't be on here unless you were serious!
I would never call anyone on IB a layabout - the system's there to support you and you're not a bad person for claiming it!
Your phrase 'cash in hand' is the most heinous swear word someone like me in the regulated finance industry can hear! Its meaning is that someone is being paid for something and because it's in cash, they don't declare it because it's not traceable. Perhaps I misunderstood you but my thought was that your husband does these outside his normal business accounts - if this is the case, he needs to change his practices ASAP before he gets in trouble!
I'm hoping your accountant knows what he/she is doing as with you being a partner, you will be able to take a share of the profits and this could affect your benefits - just checking you know the score, sorry to worry you!
Anyway I'm going to step away from this thread (!) as my advice has been given
Good luck!
Hi I appologise if I have bitten you head off, it wasnt my intentions, just this whole financial situation winds me up a little at times. My husband doesnt help much either as you may be able to tell?!
Profits :rotfl: what profits? Thats the funniest assumption I have heared all day thanks for making me smile LOL 'We' (note this term is used loosley to generalise I am no longer working) have traded at a loss for 8 years when we set up business!
Thanks for the advice its much appreciated.

when you say you cannot retrain, or it would take too long what do you mean? What were you doing before you got sick? I wonder whether you could take work in freelance, maybe typing? Or childcare? What about ironing or dog walking?
Could you temp? Only my freind has a very painful condition as well, and some weeks shes totally fine, at that point she goes out to work. When she isnt well, she can get benefits, she has an arrangement with the BA. I suggest you speak with an incapcity advisor, they might be able to suggest a scheme to help you get work that you can handle, and not work when you are too poorly x
To answer the question I was Self Employed before I got sick. Working with my husband who is a car valeter. I also did his admin work and advertising, from home.
Thanks for the advice on temp work and I will check out the info from local benefits office as well. If I could find a job working from home that was genuine, maybe something on the internet, doing peoples admin and making their bookings or even as tedious as envelope stuffers / mail shot work or suchlike that are genuine and not a 'send us £20 and well show you the con' then I would be very interested. ANother point I fear is I have lost so much of my confidence so interviews and even working in an office would be a big issue for me these days. I did think of trying a local catalogue distributor job as apparantly I can work up to 16 hours without losing benefit but most of them are commision based only so I would earn not a lot. Yet it may give me some freedome if my condition would alow and I didnt have to cart a lot of heavy books about for long hours.
I hadnt thought of ironing or dog walking, but surely I have to be cautiose as I dont want to be accused of fraud.
What I meant by retraining takes too long is the fact I would have to go to college and start from scratch to earn an NVQ or whatever they are called these days to impress employers. Going to college to get these qualifications would take a minimum of 1 - 2 years. Even if I went to night school or studied at home I would have to declare it and I would have to reduce or stop my benefits.
Will look into your ideas thanks again.0 -
Going to college and retraining does not mean you will lose entitlement to benefits. Having read through a few of your posts about your situation you seem to be making assumptions rather then finding out what you can and cant do (I don't mean that in a bad way btw)
Make an appointment with your local Job Centre Plus office to go in and see an adviser. They will tell you all the options available to you and how things could affect your benefits. I am not an expert on Incapacity Benefit by a long shot (I've administered Job Seekers Allowance/Income Support and Pension Credit) but I do know there are various schemes to help support people who want to work whatever their circumstances. It has come a long way from the old 'dole place
I've been both sides of the department, I am presently claiming Income Support as a Lone Parent and they have connected me with various agencies to help me work towards re-qualifying as a Book Keeper and the support is on offer you go talk to them about it. Especially when you want to work
I also have to say why on earth would you work full-time in a business where you are trading as a lossOne year maybe two crappy years but 8 continuous years of it not working out, I think you may need to find an alternative way of getting the message over to your OH about that one
