Graduation Ceremony

hi,

got my graduation on Monday, just a question about the dress code.

it says "Candidates are advised to dress smartly for the occasion; for example, a suit or trousers/skirt.".
do i wear a suit jacket, smart trousers, and any shirt and tie of my choice? say pink shirt and tie? or does it have a standard colour scheme i must stick to?

thanx, don't want to stick out if it is white shirt black tie kinda thing. hope if ain't a roasting day too

James

I'd try and find out what colour your hood is going to be and get something that won't clash too much. most of us wore the full shebang - we were getting used to them by then, as we had all been doing interviews too! :)
try and keep the shirt adn tie neutral, if you don't kno what your graduation hoodie is going to look like - I was lucky, we had red, blue and grey. very neutral! my boyfriend had pink with fluffy bits! he was not pleased!

my dd had to wear either black or white as you do see clothes underneath the robe. if there is no dress code given to you i suppose it's a matter of good taste and how much you want to stick out given that graduations are pure theatre.

i would bring a couple of safety pins with you though as the hoods tend to slip off the shoulders and are fairly heavy.

Smart shirt / trousers and take a couple of ties with you so you don't clash with hood.

    Have a wonderful day

I would also recommend a white shirt with black trousers. Take a few ties so you can see which looks best with the hood. After working at graduations for the past couple of days I can honestly say that anything that deviates from that (unless it it national dress) just looks odd. There was a girl who had a red dress on, another who had black shorts with a bright green top, and a guy who wore grey. They stood out like a sore thumb.

Also wondering about this. As a woman I dont have any decent shirts / black trousers as its somthing I just dont need in my job (uniform provided).

But I do have a very smart black and white dress that I treated myself to for my 21st party, would it be ok to wear this?

It says they reccomend wearing a shirt as its easier to attach the robes but I cant afford to go and buy it, plus this dress cost me a lot and i want as much wear as possible :P

Did anyone else wear a dress and get on ok?

  • they advise a shirt as it is easier to attach the gown to a shirt button on the front as it stops it slipping back. saying that it is possible to attach the robes with safety pins if you do not have a button on the front but make sure you take lots of small safety pins if you wear a dress

    oh thanx for the replies,
the gown is black as you would expect with a black hood trimmed with white fur and royal blue edging.
think a white shirt and a nice tie would be good

    Hi kr15
To reiterate LLL, all the girls who wore dresses at our graduation had a lot of trouble with their gowns etc. shirt and skirt would be fine too (doens't have to be trousers!).

You can wear what you want! :p All they do is request that you dress smartly, although most gowns cover up completely what you have on underneath.

I wore a nice black gothic dress and New Rock boots ;) - although it was for a fashion course so I was far from the most outlandishly dressed. We didn't get to wear those clapperboard hats though. :(
