Large spreadsheet help please.

I have a large 6000 row spreadsheet with two columns:
The first column displays 'containers' and there are about 100 different types of them.
The second column is a list of the 'objects' in the 'containers' and they are each unique and there are 6000 of them.
What I want to do is find an easy way to create a new spreadsheet that displays the number of 'objects' in each 'container'.
Anyone know how to do this (in Openoffice preferably)
thanks !

A pivot table would do that for you - I assume Openoffice has an equivalent.

edit: They're called Data Pilots in Openoffice:

Highlight the range and go to Data - Datapilot - Start. Then select current selection and drag the column names into Row. Drag the objects into Data and double click it and change to count. Should give you a table with Container Object and number of objects.0
