Depending on the new deal saving or overpaying the mortgage could be cheaper. The 10% regular savers, including the offshore (so not guaranteed!) Halifax 10% regular saver that can take up to 2,000 a month could be interesting, particularly if you have a partner who doesn't pay tax on savings because their income is low.

For the longer term you should see what you think of investing instead of saving. Here's a selection of some investments with different degrees of variability:

    BlackRock UK Absolute Alpha
    Cru Investment Portfolio
    Invesco Perpetual Monthly Income Plus
    Invesco Perpetual Income
    Neptune Global Equity

The chart shows how the volatilities differ (colors are red, blue, yellow, green, gray in fund order).

The first two are pretty stable and likely to remain quite stable, though that's not guaranteed and they definitely could decrease in value - as you'll see the BlackRock fund has been going down a little recently. Both of those also pay out any gains in the form of a capital gain so you'd have your 9600 capital gains tax allowance to use even outside an ISA before you'd have any tax to pay.

I notice Blackrock Absolute Alpha has uncharacteristicaly lost value every day since the beginning of this month, now 2% down. Better than the FTSE All share's 3.5% but interesting.

earlgrey, yes, if you look at the charts you'll find that it's happened from time to time before as well. Charts tend to magnify the apparent size of recent events compared to past events so some care is needed in reading them.

At 118.7p it's now at the level it reached on its more usual upward trend for the first time on 4 June this year. Highest ever was 120.8p on 1 and 2 July.
  • So far I had not actually made any OPs. I have some money tied up in a few fixed bonds, and set aside to feed the Halifax 10% saver for the next year, so won't be putting it into the mortgage until next year.

However, I have just sent my first OP cheque to Abbey for £180 today. My first ever OP :-)

Part of me wanted to pay the money into a savings account (this sounds silly) so I can see it sat there in the total. But I know that paying it into the mortgage is a better form of saving, it just feels like it's disappearing! Just me being daft!

  • Sent off another £150. 2 of the OPs have come from DJing, and the other one from having a very busy week teaching people to drive!
