PC playing up

Hope you guys can help.

The past couple of days days our pc is reluctant to turn on...it seems as if it is *stuck* just wont boot up.

Earlier today it just turned itself off for no reason.

have run AVG scan-found nothing
run bit defender-found nothing

yesterday on the screen it came up "load needed DLLs...software error"
have also had "need to close down to save files"

Any ideas what it could be or how to recify it?

At what stage does it get stuck? Do you get any splash screen or Bios messages, or an initial Windows screen which then stops? If you get no messages at al then it's most likely a hardware problem. If you get an initial Windows screen then a common cause is either impending hard disk failure or malware that you haven't yet found.

For the former, try running chkdsk /f at the command prompt (you will need to reboot for it to run) and watch for errors while it's checking. For the latter, see the guides on malware in the sticky at the top of the Techie section.

Sometimes it just wont do anything at all but mainly we get to the Windows screen then it turns off.

Oops, should have said run "chkdsk c: /f" at the command prompt!

From what you say, it sounds like a hardware problem other than hard disk failure, as that would typically give error messages or other symptoms. One possibility is memory problems - not a high probability, but easy to check by running Memtest:

If you're not used to making a CD from an ISO file then you may need further advice here on that.

Another possibility is power supply problems, but that's hard to diagnose without swapping the PSU for another.

    How to use scannow sfc...

The main reason for using this utility is when you suspect there may be a problem with a Windows XP system file.
Perhaps you get a dialog box appear informing you of a problem with a .dll file, or your program will just not load! It is therefore worth checking to see if there are any corrupt system files using scannow sfc.

To do this simply go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

    sfc /scannow

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem.

The following should appear to give an indication of how long the process is taking.

    scannow1.gif

In an ideal world that would be the end of the story... Any corrupt, missing or incorrect files would be replaced by this process.
