Memory Needed

I`m fairly competant with computers, but I dont have a cleu when it comes to memory. Ive used a site called crucial or something like that to scan my pc to tell me what memory i need, and its come back saying that I`ve got the maximum it will allow 4gb, but the pc is pretty old and Imsure it has 512mb. Are there any other sites that will scan the pc and let me know the correct type and amount of sticks i need.

Well Crucial are normally reliable and that is a pretty impresive discrepancy. You could download Belarc Advisor, that should tell you what you have. You could also check in Control Panel under System. Alternatively you could just take the side off and look!
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

    I recommend AIDA32, it's fairly reliable!
A friend is someone who understands your past, believes in your future, and accepts you just the way you are.
  • Right click My Computer, click on Properties and then on the General tab it'll tell you how much memory you have installed.

I read this as you thinking you has 512Meg installed, but Crucial was telling you you had 4Gig installed.

You should still be able to find motherboard data from the manufacturers website which'll tell you how much you can have.

as stated the only source of information that can be trusted 99% is the manufacturer not any website will be that accurate.
identify the mainboard and it will be problem solved, though some cheaper board makers will occasionally get it wrong too.
Post the mainboard make and model someone else is bound to have tried this out!
