Networking on Virgin broadband

So, I have one broadband router, one computer downstairs and one upstairs and want to network the two.

My Virgin adsl modem they supplied is a USB one and not compatible with the Ethernet router.

Excuse me for sounding dumb, but I assume I now need to buy a DSL modem with an ethernet port?

Any suggestions on what is cheap - this is a student household, and I can't really afford a wireless network as it would mean the additional expense of putting a wireless card in one of my p.c's which is quite old.

As I understand it, there will be an ethernet cable running from my (main) pc downstairs to connect to the broadband router. Same for the downstairs pc. The broadband router then connects to a DSL modem which then connects to the phone line?

Advice in plain English please :)

  • 25 quid for one of these will suit you, Sir. Good reviews as well.

    Correct

This one box does both of those. Ethernet from PCs in, phone line out.

I'm sure there will be an expert along shortly who will be more help than I can be. We are with Virgin.net and network a laptop and PC, using a Belkin router. My laptop has a card, which cost around £25 from PC World. As stated, I'm no expert, but when we used the modems supplied by Virgin, we used a crossover cable connected between the two PCs.

Hope someone can help, however, re Virgin ISP fees. We were on 512K with Virgin and paying £17.99. On requesting the MAC code in order to change ISP, they gave us 2MB for the same price.

    Good luck

You're on the same plan as me.

Problem is, my router does not have an inbuilt modem, hence the need to spend more which I'm a bit annoyed about. Thanks for that link BTW, I'm checking ebay also.

The Virgin modem only has a connection for an RJ45 cable, no ethernet port, which is why I'm experiencing frustration with my DLink router which is an ethernet based thing. I just want to network the two pc's as cheaply as possible. So far I have:

    - Virgin USB modem
    - Dlink broadband ethernet router
    - Two straight wired CAT5 cables to link the pc's to the router.

But no way to seemingly get from the router to the phone line if this makes sense. I hate technical things now I'm no longer providing tech support lol.

    Thanks for the advice.
