Domestic Situation with Credit Card

I have a brother who does things like this
I think it will be difficult for your Mum to close the account without revealing the fraud (as she won't know any of the security questions/passwords). Perhaps if she says the card has been mislaid and she can no longer remember the information they will close it down and reissue new cards (which will be sent to her address) giving her the opportunity to reset security info and then close the account.

Thanks for all your replies.
I shall send them a letter explaining that i have lost the card and hopefully they will then at least temporarily deactivate while i wait for new cards and then close the account off.
I'll see what response we get before deciding further what the best course of action is.
I was reading on the CIFAS website how you can stop this sort of thing happening. Apparently they are able to put a 'CIFAS Protective Registration' against the address which means that further identification or checks are required against the person before issuing credit. Its a route i think i will expore further. Although it may not stop this at least it may mean it will be difficult to do in the future.0 -
Hummy
dealing with Egg is like trying to tame a rabid Rottie!! My wife last year had an Egg card which she applied for online. Unfortunately her business crashed and she was declared bankrupt. EGG placed a non payment notice ON MY CREDIT FILE. When asked why they said I was on the application form. Fortunately, we kept it and I was not.
Then they said as we had joint applications on my file (Mortgage etc) they had a right to register the notice. When I threatened the muppet on the phone with the consumer credit act, and also the regulator, they relented and withdrew the default notice. This all took roughly 6 months!
Sorry for shouting but EGG ARE USELESS, AVOID THEM LIKE THE PLAGUE!!!My broad mind and narrow waist are slowly swapping places!!0 -
Just a thought:
Probably, there is no any second cardholder and a second (cut) card. Your brother prbably uses your mum's card. My Amex Blue does not have any title (Mr/Mrs) - only initial and surname....0 -
Not wishing to inflame the situation, but you are not allowed to get a credit reference report for someone else, even with their permission (only know this as I signed up for the Experian free trial yesterday and it mentioned this in the sign up process). I think that is the Data Protection Act if I recall. Therefore you need to be careful using this information.
As mentioned above, I think if she is not aware, your mum needs to know about this as technically it is nothing to do with you (though I understand your concern). You/she need to have a word with your brother and ask him to cancel the account - if he refuses to do so, then you mother could write to them and ask them to cancel her account (assuming £0 balance) - as this would state name and address (not necessarily account number as I suspect you don't know this) then that should be enough information.
On another track, it may be that your mum wants to help out - if (as you say) he is managing this effectively perhaps he could be pursuaded to give your mum the account log in details - she could perhaps let him then keep the card (as you note, he cannot get his own) and monitor the account. Did I just say that, obviously getting late - there is a major risk he will run up debts in your mum's name. The key, if possible, is to get the account closed without having to reveal the fraud as that will not do much for family relations.
