...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.

Oh !!!!!!. You seriously think this govt is Socialist? Since poverty has greatly increased since Thatcherism, (which has not been reversed by New Labour) your argument is flatly contradicted by the evidence.

Socialists don't decrease poverty. Socialists like to control what other people do and how their money is spent.

UK consumer spending power has fallen "dramatically" due to a large rise in the cost of living, research by Ernst & Young suggests.
The average household is 15% worse off than it was five years ago, the Annual Discretionary Income Study says.
After household bills and tax, it found the typical family had less than 20% of its gross income remaining - compared with 28% in 2003.
It added that rate rises and fuel bills meant "the worst could be yet to come".

Ms Anecdotal here (or Ms 'I read it in a book but can't recall which one').

My T/O is Down around 40% BUT I have local factors too.

We have concluded that we are Down (with a big cap D) by 20% local factors and 20% general, economic crunch factors.

Can't do much about either really, as out of my control BUT the customers who have got a few £££ to spend...well, got to try and tempt them to spend a little more with us and less in Clone Town shops.

Easier said than done...but not impossible.

The UK is massively 'Overshopped' (Trade phrase) and chickens coming home to roost now.
I don't take anything for granted but have off days like anyone else (when one tries not to growl at the customers mucking up the shop, saying how lovely it is....then wandering off to Primark to do the actual spending).

Too much stuff out there for essential needs. Way too much. Change in living, buying habits kicking in but will take a decade to evolve.

    Because they know best.
My SIL is Russian and older members of her family really miss the communist way of life, have really struggled to adapt.

She was given a lovely flat in St Petes at age 18 by the party. Signed over to her when Communism collapsed.
Some ended up with a concrete flat, some ended up with a lot more. Wasn't fair at all.

Socialists like to keep people poor as it means a larger natural constituency for them. Most socialists come from monied and educated backgrounds so have no idea what they're talking about when it comes to poverty.

We have a saying in Yorkshire 'they get fitted carpets 'an they think they're conservatives' it was these 'conservatives' that gave Mrs T her last term and lived to regret it. A x

There was a long tradition, in the north-west at least, of working class Tories. All my grandparents voted Conservative, for example. They weren't alone.

Ok. Middle classes as socialists. If the entire working class had voted Labour throughout the C20th we'd have had Labour Governments throughout the C20th so clearly they didn't.

The background of the last few Labour PMs:

Harold Wilson. Father was a chemist, mother was a teacher. Educated at Grammer school and university
Jim Callaghan. Father was a Chief Petty Officer. Mother no career. Educated at Secondary School.
Tony Blair. Father a lawyer. Educated at Fettes and Edinburgh University.
Gordon Brown. Father a church minister. Educated at Kirkcaldy High School (state owned) and Edinburgh University.

With the exception of Sunny Jim, these are not people who are 'the most vunnerble in socity' (c) Noo Labour. Karl Marx's father was a lawyer.
