Can anyone tell me how to do this??

I've been lucky enough to get my hands on a reasonably priced asus and would like to connect it to the broadband service I already use at home but how??

I've been reading things about it but am completely confused - wireless routers, usb adapters etc... what do I actually need and what do I do with it?

If anyone can explain in a very very simple way, i'd be ever so grateful!

How do you currently connect to your broadband isp?

    Ethernet?

    USB adapter?

    WiFi?

Let us know and someone may be able to help

Your broadband modem should have either a USB or Ethernet cable connected to it which connects to the USB/Ethernet connection on your computer. Windows should be able to automatically detect the connection although depending on your broadband service provider you may need your USP you may need their software to connect if it doesn't automatically do so.

Ideally connect via a Ethernet cable.

    Hope this helps.

Asus make many different laptop and desktop machines. Is it an Asus Eee 701 with Linux by any chance? And are you trying to connect wirelessly on wired? What kind of modem or router are you using?

I have the 701 with Linux and as for broadband, I think it might be ethernet but then again, I'm not sure what the difference is between an USB and ethernet cable.

The broadband moden plugs into the USB port at the back of the computer one end(ah! I think i've just answered your question Bear family, it must be a USB cable!) and then into the phone socket at the other.
and I want to connect wirelessly.

At the risk of sounding completely dumb, where does the router go if there are no wires??

You can use either a wired or wireless modem/router. Both plug into your telephone socket (or cable socket if you have a cable internet service). The wired router is connected to your laptop by an ethernet cable. A wireless one doesn't need a cable and provides more flexibility in terms of location.

What inernet service do you have? How do you connect at the moment? What modem do you use?

Your Eee PC has wireless built in, so all that you need to do is replace your ADSL modem with an ADSL wireless router e.g. one of these here.

    Job done!

Good grief, I didn't realise it was as simple as all that!
So I don't even have to change/install anything on my computer then - cool.
    Cheers espresso!
