October hol for 4

Hi,
My wife and I and another couple (all aged about 28) are looking to take a weekend break in the UK (probably) at the beginning of October. We'd like to "posh" it up a bit if possible. We're all in London, but would like to get out to the coast (if it's not too cold!) or the countryside.

Can anyone advise as to any special offers that are on at the moment for transport or, more importantly, accommodation?

Thanks for your help!

Has anyone tried being a member of one of the hotel clubs, such as that advertised in "HotLine" magazine on Virgin Trains?

From what I understand, so long as you pay for a meal in the hotel restaurant, you get your accommodation for free. Some of the hotels look *very* nice.

Are there any other catches, or is it really as good a deal as it looks?

For up-market s/c accom you can do no better than looking at Alistair Sawday's website - not cheap, but with current 'credit crunch' might be some deals nearer the time?

There are some nice recommendations that might suit on The Real Visitors Book

Peace & Plenty sounds lovely - sleeps 4 - not been myself but some nice reviews - or try their 'Great for Grown Ups' pages

Absolutely heavenly, quirky places on Under The Thatch website - http://www.underthethatch.co.uk/ - all in Wales but they offer really unusual places like Romany Caravans (if that's your cup of tea!)

Incidentally, in our experience, if you want to be as good friends with these people when you come back as you were before you went on holiday (!) - TWO cottages next to each other might be the perfect solution! (Rose Retreat & Honeysuckle Hideaway are two separate cottages on same farm - sleep two each and owner does Reiki treatments etc (not ME incidentally!!!) - again, check out at Real Visitors
