Digital camera advice please!!

I love Art and have studied textiles and fashion illustration for a few years but recently Ive become interested in photography.
I travel quite a bit and like reading national geographic and it's portrait photography I'd like to get into.
I want to invest in a really good camera that, ok, I might not understand fully at first but one I can learn with and get really good pictures up close and be able to use photoshop, then enlarge to maybe A3 and more. I don't want a regular camera again that won't give me the results I want (when I know what I'm doing that is).
I went on to Whichdigital camera but this just confused me, I've never studied photography before and don't know where to start. Any suggestions? I would be really grateful for advice.:o

As always, I'd recommend the Nikon D40. £272 from Amazon with a £30 mail-in rebate offer from Nikon and a free 2 year warranty.
Works great in automatic, and the manual mode is there when you start to get more confident in your abilities. You can also expand it by buying new lenses, flashes, filters, etc.0 -
I would also go for the Nikon D40.
Great camera!0
