HP printer not recognised

All of a sudden my computer does no recognise my printer. When I click on control panel/printers, there is nothing listed. When I go to the HP help pages as listed in "all programs" is says "no printer found" . What is likely to have caused this and how can I put it right? Hope you can help.
Also, when I tried to open a document listed in "my documents" I'm told there is no programme to do this. I did report some time ago that I seem to have lost Microsoft Office-Word Document but I did find WordPad and used that to type something andnow cannot open these documents, new or old. The only thing I have done with my computer in recent times is to clean it up with Cclean, disk defrag etc.

Hello again jack

If you have time download openoffice http://www.openoffice.org/
Check that the usb cable is in the computer and the printer may have fallen out if you moved it and make sure the power is connected. If its still not working try seeing if reinstalling the hp drivers from the disc or downloading them from there site work.0 -
Hello Thomas, I am not Jack - weird?
I unstalled HP printer and reinstalled it from the original disc. Got to see if it works now. If not I did get a very fast response from HP with yards of instructions on how to put things right.0 -
