Fed up with AVG 8 - what free AV?

What free antivirus/antispyware software does everyone use?

I am fed up with AVG8 already - why does it need to close my browser and/or restart my computer every time it updates? And if you let it, it does that horrible 30 second countdown thing on the browser closing.

Can you please let me know what antivirus you use and whether it:
Has any form of pop ups
Makes a sound with the pop ups
Has a scheduled scan, or one you can turn off
Comes with loads of pointless extras
Uses much/many system resources
Has an animated icon (next to the clock)

Or any or none of the above :) I don't see why I need to pay but I'd like to get an idea of the different freebies available.
I don't believe and I never did that two wrongs make a right

There's Antivir and Avast that you could try. Personally I don't use the freebies any more, I find Eset Smart Security worth the money.

I've gone to Avast from AVG. It includes an e-mail scanner, which Antivir didn't last time I looked. Seems to be working fine.

Same for me - AVG to Avast.
Has a pop-up when virus database has updated with a voice telling you too.
an't find a scheduled scan, but it might be there somewhere.
Doesn't seem to use to many resources.
    Has an animated icon.

Eset NOD32 for me. Superb piece of software and it does not slow down the pc like Norton did

I use Avira (£10) but it's very unintrusive. Apparently it is the best at virus detection in the market. Free edition is worth a go.

Thanks everyone - I was hoping avast wasn't as annoying as I remembered but it sounds like it still is! I don't need an email scanner because I only use hotmail, but thanks for the info. Think I will try avira.

I dont know what I have done but I don't have any problems with AVG8 I have set it up to do update at 9am every morning and have no problems at all. After reading this i thought maybe it was not turned on or something but I have just checked and it is fully updated.

I can't praise AVG8 enough no problems at all!!
