Hi ive been trying to find out who will supply me with the cheapest electricity, i live in a 2 bed flat thats all electric.currently with scottish power and on economy 7. i used the links from this site a few months back and it came up with npower as cheapest, but when i went through the whole process they said as i have 2 supply numbers they couldn't switch it over ??? is that something to do with the econ7 ? now that ive received the letter from lecy people telling me theyre putting the price up i want to know where i stand with the 2 supply numbers and changing over etc..
any help/info well appreciated.
thanks

Could they be referring to the two readouts on your meter that give daytime units and economy 7 units?

As a domestic consumer, it is unlikely that you will have more than one supply number. It sounds like they may be confusing two flats as one address to me...

Your electricity supply number (or MPAN) is a 21-digit number which identifies the supply to your property for billing purposes. If you can locate and give them this number when you switch, you should have no problems.

You should find your electricity supply number on your existing bills - it will be in a box with a 'S' at the left, usually above your usage details. If you cannot find it on your bill, you can get it by contacting your existing supplier.

This is different to the meter numbers, each property should only have one electricity supply number regardless of your type of supply.

ok thanks people, well i ve tried SP to get the S-number but they gave me another 0845 no. to phone to find it out, but that line is constantly busy after you go through the automated bit.
thing is im about 80% sure on my old bill, i dont have it handy, that there was 2 S-numbers. this is what started some of the problems, ill contact SP and get them to send an old bill out to me. for what im reading its not time to switch over yet. any more advice please feel free to pitch in.
    thanks

just off the phone to SP got the mpan no. and he explained about the s no. being only relevant to the meter, makes a little more sense now.
here another though i thought i was economy 7 but ive now been told im on comfort + white meter, and that its the same as econ 7. is that the case?
    thanks

Not sure on that one, I've only have experience with economy 7. I reckon all the cheap off-peak setups were termed 'white meter' years ago, because of the white meter and fusebox which were fitted.

The only other setup I've seen is the economy 10 tariffs which give a few hours of cheap electricity in the afternoon in exchange for a higher overall cheap rate.

If they have stated it's the same as economy 7, I shouldn't think there would be any problem?

I would think you have 2 meters. One with 2 dials, low & normal & another with 1 dial which is probably for your heating. If this is the case you will have 2 supply numbers or MPAN`s which means you can`t change suppliers or at least you couldn`t when I worked for lecky board a few years back.

You could change to Economy 7 but this would require an electrician to change a few wires at your meter position & then ask your Supplier for a change of tariff to Economy 7.

OP says he's now got his MPAN, I assume just the one so he should be OK now?

As meters are now replaced every 10 years, I didn't think about him having one of these old metering set ups. Perhaps you're right...

If the OP does have this metering arrangement, I suspect he could have it removed and a standard e7 meter and timeswitch fitted by the REC for a modest cost, with a bit of luck.

hey folks thanks for the replies, i have one meter digital display that has different rates on it when you select through them.
yep i have my mpan they assured me that there is only one per house which will remain the same, the serial/supply no are for the meters, should they move or take away refurb and give to someone else a meter then the s no goes with it.
    whos OP? is that me?

original poster? getting the hang of this.
  • i had an issue with my leccy when i switched too, to cut a long story short ...
The old woman that lived here before had two supply numbers, she had been paying scottish power manweb and a british gas bill, turned out she had been paying for her house and a football hut that is next to the house for the last 10 yrs!

Luckily i found this out when i went to switch! Best to call Transco and find out who officially supplys your flat and what the other supply number is.

It took me about 3 months to get it sorted as SPM and british gas were saying they both supplied my electric (or gas cant remember which, gas i think actually). Anyway its finally sorted and im with Npower for both gas and electric.

Not much help but its worth finding out why u have 2 supply numbers.
