top & tail gooseberries - easy

If you want an easy way to top and tail gooseberries use a strawberry huller - it's so quick and easy to just pull off the stalk and tail without mangling the fruit.... took me 5 minutes today to deal with a huge punnet of them......dunno why I didn't think of trying it before.

When they're ripe they're slightly brownish and soft. You could always try tasting one, if they're tart they are not ripe. Unless you are right up in the North they should be ripe by now, mine are very ripe and I live in Surrey.

That said, a lot of people prefer them before they are ripe, precisely because they are tart.
