Cornflake cake disaster!

I would say it was the mars bar. Melting choc is easy and it quickly turns runny. But I think adding a mars bar which had caramel and stuff in it would really turn it into a sticky mess. Def try without the marsbar next time.
I keep meaning to try these again but tempering the chocolate so its not all melty when you eat them.
ALso as the above poster said about getting water into the choc is a big no no, did you keep the choc in the fridge? if so that would do it. But if you do get water in melted choc then usualy adding some more choc or a little veg oil sorts it out but the end resutl will not be as good!JeremyMarried 9th May 20090 -
I'm pretty sure the mars bar was the culprit! Anyway, I ate one tonight (just for research purposes obviously) and it was actually really nice! A bit chewy, lovely chocolatey flavour & not too sweet. Having said that I won't be making them again, think I'll just stick to melted chocolate in future!0

Sorry, I've just reread your original post and you did say that. DD2 was jabbering in my ear at the time and I obviously didn't read it properly- just saw 'microwave'
It must have been the Mars bar then. Glad they did still taste good!

Mars bar cornflake cakes. Interesting. Some of the worlds' best foods and dishes have come about by accident. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0

Hya,
I make 'mars bar cakes' with my girls - had a disaster when using the microwave, but if I melt my mars bars with a big blob of butter over a gentle heat in a pan it seems to work. Then we chuck in loads or rice krispies and then pop in the fridge. Absolutely yummy, very more-ish! Never last long in our house!!I really need to sort out a new signature!0 -
Have been thinking about this & am wondering if I could have made 'truffles' out of the gloopy paste instead of persevering with the cornflakes?! It was that kind of consistency. Maybe added some desiccated coconut?! Wouldn't have made many but I'll bet they would have been lovely & sweet!0

millyscarlett - your idea sounds lovely! Makes me laugh though because your post reminds me that cornflake cakes really are supposed to be easy - kids play - & I can't believe I made such a mess of them today - I'm a grown up!0

I agree - we only use Mars Bars and put them in with butter and a few marshmallows - the thing with Mars bars is you have to do it in directly the pan and not in a bowl over water.I'm so sexy it's a wonder my underpants don't explode.0 -
A lesson learned!0

Def don't bin any disasters like this - even if they don't hold together or have the wrong texture for cakes you can use them as a topping for value icecream (here speaks the woman who has a failed batch in the freezer waiting for said icecream to get onto the next shopping trip budget allowing!)0
