Cornflake cake disaster!

Options
Hi, newbie poster here so apologies if this is in the wrong place!
I have just attempted to make some cornflake cakes using MrT value milk chocolate & a chopped up mars bar (an experiment!) but it all went horribly wrong! I melted the above in a bowl over hot water because I don't have a microwave & it congealed into a thick gloopy paste! Rather stupidly I persevered and added the cornflakes - as you can imagine it didn't mix in very well! :o In a panic I added some golden syrup and mixed it all together, put it in paper cases & have bunged it in the fridge to see what happens. Anyone out there know what I did wrong in the first place?! Also, will the syrup help it stick together & 'set'?! Should I have tried something else?!
It's not a major disaster if they end up in the bin, the cornflakes were free (left over from visitors who brought their own), the value choc was 39p & the mars bar worked out at 20p.

They may be sticky and messy but I'm sure they'll taste great -what's not to like? :D

I think that the syrup was probably unecessary though. Once the mixture is in the fridge it firms up. If you want to make something more solid try adding crushed biscuits and pressing into a shallow tin and refrigerating. Cut into bars and store in the fridge. Add raisins, cherries etc too if you like;)

It doesn't sound like a disaster, it will have been the mars bars, they go sticky when melted so it will just be a chocolaty, sweet crunchy delight.

Enjoy when they have set :)

Thanks thriftlady, that sounds lovely, will try that but minus the mars bar methinks!
The problem with my cakes was that the cornflakes weren't mixing into the choc/mars bar mix, I was just getting lumps of chocolatey paste with a few cornflake crumbs attached! I'm sure they will still be edible, if sweet & sticky the kids will love them but I think I'll give them a miss!

You might have over heated the chocolate- really easy to do in a microwave. They will still taste great though! (Talking from experience!)

OK-daughter just had one-moaned about lack of chocolate covering before she even tried it! Knew straightaway that there was something extra added when she bit into it but couldn't put her finger on what it was! Anyway the result was 'nice but sweet'! So going in packed lunches tomorrow instead of the bin!
hmkn - melted in bowl over hot water because don't have a microwave - I blame the mars bar!

Did any of the simmering water splash into the bowl or could the bowl containing the choclate have been damp? Chocolate and water really don't mix, it tends to turn the chocolate grainy and paste-like even if it is a few drops or is mixed with a spoon that has been in someones mouth :( that is enough to cause the chocolate to split.
