Our car was sold with wrong tyres

Does anyone know where we stand with this? We traded in our old car and bought an approved used car. It was sold as having new run flats all round. Yesterday OH got a puncture and went off to Kwik Fit expecting to pay £250 for a new one. Kwik Fit said that he had run flats on the front but not at the back. OH phoned the dealer who put him on to the tyre people. They told him that the configuration of tyres was not something they'd usually put on. They'd usually put on 4 run flats or 4 normal tyres and a space saver in the boot. The General Manager was meant to phone back but hasn't. In the meantime Kwik Fit repaired the puncture but we still need to replace the back two tyres. Obviously we don't want to fork out £500 when we were told that the car came with 4 new tyres when it actually came with two new ones at the front and two used ones on the back. It wasn't a cheap car either and seeing as we got a new 320 and a 2 year old 530 we expected decent service from the dealer.

Is there anything we can use in a dispute with them and have they broken any rules by selling us something not as described? I'd really appreciate a y words of wisdom. Thanks :-)

How long since you bought this car?

I think you would need something in writing that said "4 new tyres" and evidence that all 4 tyres were not new to have any hope in court. I guess if you bother the dealer enough they'll probably cough up to get rid of you. But when it's only a couple hundred quid is it really worth the hassle? How long ago is it since the car was purchased?

Run flats aren't necessarily better than standard tyres anyway. Given the choice I'd have a full set of standard tyres.

We got the car at the end of last year. BMW promised new tyre, full service etc. To make all 4 either run flat or non run flat will cost us at least £500 - we have the high profile, big alloys wheels (sorry - I'm too girly to know sizes or what things are called).

OH prefers normal tyres and was going to replace them all when they needed doing. I prefer run flats as I wouldn't have a clue how to do anything other than phone breakdown if I got a flat. We just didn't expect such a big hit on tyres so soon when promises made weren't kept. I suppose we could tell them we'll have our services done elsewhere. I thought there might be something we could say to them to get them to keep their promise.
  • If it were me, i'd just run the things until their worn and change to normal tyres as and when replacements needed.
These runflat things are ridiculously expensive, virtually twice the price of carefully purchased high quality standard tyres.
And i don't mean Chinese ditchfinders either.

I presume there is a spare wheel and jack in the boot, read up and practice changing a wheel at home, the side of a dark, wet, busy motorway is not the place to learn.

£250 per tyre! That's very expensive.

Sorry but you did not answer the question. What exactly did BMW promise in regards to the tyres/wheels, and do you have it written on the purchase agreement"?

Do you have any photographs taken of the car in the last 7 months?

If you bought the car from a BMW dealer then they have clearly broke their own rules as they themselves strictly stipulate you use 4 run flat or 4 standard tyres as the tyre characteristics are entirely different and you must not mix the tyres! If you have standard tyres on the car then you need a mobility kit which they have not supplied by the sounds of it.

If you went to part ex the car back to the same dealer they would reject it for sure!

Who have you spoke to at BMW?
