Dogs and coconuts?

Are they allowed them?

Harley is having loads of fun with a 58p small coconut from Morrisons. The daft beast has no idea what to make of it and pounces on it with a playful growl then runs round it and pounces again. He's been in the garden playing happily with it for at least half an hour.

Anyway, should he get it open....is he allowed the milk and the coconut flesh inside or not?

I've never heard of anything specifically about coconuts being bad for dogs, though the flesh is quite oily when it is fresh and might upset his tummy a little.

I'd be inclined to take as much of the loose hair of it as possible too, probably wouldn't be too good to eat a lot of that. Obviously don't leave him unattended with it, and if he does get it open, keep an eye on him so that he doesn't choke or try to eat the husk.

My dog managed to steal a coconut out of the fruit bowl once. He never got it open, but I have some lovely decorative dents in my walls to show that he tried!
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.

Nothing specific from the Veterinary Poisons Service about coconut poisoning. Apparently it can even be used as a cure for aluminium poisoning.....

Just keep an eye on him. If only to stop him chucking it through the window.:D

I bought one for my dog once as someone on a dog forum I go on said their dog loves to play with it and they are great for dogs with strong jaws as they are near indestructible. My dog wouldn't even look at it never mind play with it and I couldn't work out how to open it so it went in the bin - not very money saving. lol

Nothing to do with animals, but this is how you open a coconut:

Get a large knife, like a carving knife or bread knife. Turn it over so the sharp side of the blade is pointing out and use the other side (the blunt side at the back of the blade) and bang the coconut hard with it around the middle, turning the coconut round until you've gone all the way around. A bit like you would go round a boiled egg with a spoon. Then you should be able to just pop the two halves apart.

Well there's no sign of it getting opened even although he's taken to carrying it about in his mouth with him. :D Looks like it'll be a new toy for a wee while then.

    Thanks for the advice.

So banging it as hard as you can with a claw hammer and swearing like a trooper when you miss and take a big chip out of the back doorstep would be wrong then?  :D

Do you think coconuts are bull terrier proof - am tempted to give it a go, although having read Pboae's first post my furniture may live to regret it.

Lol elsien, I think it would be bull terrier 0 - coconut 1 tbh. :D

Harley is smitten......my youngest had her own coconut too and he's just laid his at her feet, swiped hers and bounded off out the back door with her in hot pursuit and me doing nothing to help as I was laughing too much.

(You had to be there...it was like the Keystone Cops. )

He prefers the hairy ones...once the hair is stripped, they are apparently not as much fun.

Youngest got hers back, washed it and drilled a hole into it to put a straw in to drink the milk...decided it was 'yeuch' and so Harley got it back with the remnants of the milk dribbling out the small hole.

    He liked that too.
