I would get her a symbolic ring that is temporary so that it feels more romantic (the OH proposed but had no ring etc so it didn't feel like they show in the movies!) but give her the chance to choose her own ring and stone regardless of wether it's pre-made or custom. There are loads of things to consider like settings and what the band is made of and you want her to love the ring and wear it for the rest of her life.

Another place worth looking is outlet centers - got mine there for £200 less then it was originally and fell in love with the setting (it's called a tension setting) and it's quite unusual with the benefit that there are no claws/clasps to catch on clothes, hair etc!
