  • Not much experience of using out of date dried stuff like pulses and whatever so no help there I'm afraid ... but I did give the family a tin of peas I'd found in a dark recess the other day - and they were dated july 2000! :o I just sniffed them and they seemed ok so... ;)

I would use everything except for the dessicated coconut because it goes a bit rancid and the prunes because they will probably be dry (nothing a soak in cold tea can't fix though! :o)

I assume they are all Best Before dates and not Use By dates? Best Before is just a guideline so you won't be poisoned but the products may be dry/clumped/settled/separated but other than that perfectly edible :D

My rule is that anything dry; rice, pulses etc you can use for ages after the sell by date. My dad used to say that the manufactures came up with the date thing just to make you replace it. In the hot countries where rice, pulses etc are the main food, they store large barrels of it. I think as long as they have been in a cool, dark cupboard then your ok.

I was told once, for ready-made cooked food, the film raises if it is off, because of the acid etc that it produces once it is going off. I don't know if this is true.
I tend to eat stuff that's been in the fridge at least 3 days after the sell buy date. I thing the manufactures must give some leave way.
Anything creamy I throw out. With Pork I don't take a risk with especially in the summer.

Decide on something to use it in that can still be made if its off (like coconut buns or biscuits) then open it and smell it. You will now straight away if its rancid as it smells like a damp mop :)

You can definitely eat all the dried food. After all, how is a grain of rice going to go off? Even the dessicated coconut would be fine, I think - I just turned some 2006 coconut in an opened packet into coconut macaroons, and I just soaked it in water a little before cooking, in case it had dried out a bit in the last few years!

I'd sniff the other stuff and if it sniffs fine, I'd eat it!
