Help with ipod/itunes please?

Hiya, i have an ipod shuffle and my son a nano, he's asked me to charge it up and dl an album for him, but when i connect it its not getting recognized by my pc or itunes, does anyone know what i'm doing wrong?

Sorry i meant to ask, if my itunes is for a shuffle will it also work with the nano x
