SLR Digi-cam money saving dance

I just got back from my honeymoon in the Caribbean, and I'd treated myself to my first SLR.. I bought a Panasonic L10 and a Olympus Zuiko Digital ED 40-150 telephoto lens for a grand total of $700 (turned out to be £360 when converted on my cashback Amex credit card)..

Now, i took a look online and John Lewis wants £649 and most online shops want about £180 - 200 for the lens.. So, that's £830 of kit for £360!! They also threw in a case, memory card and lens filters.

If anyone is off to that bit of the world, check out the Royal Caribbean shop in St. Thomas.

How much duty did you have to pay when you brought it into the country?
That gum you like is coming back in style.

I think the answer to that would be exactly what the customs officer asked him to pay had they been checked or gone through the items to declare line as we all obviously do when we go abroad on spending sprees. ;)

That's not a bad price with the case and memory card.

I just bought that lens as part of a kit; Olympus E-510 twin lens kit (E-510 camera body with Zuiko 40-150 and 14-42 lenses) for £336 including delivery from an eBay shop. The E-520 is just out, so the E-510 is being cleared at some very good prices. Shipped from Nottingham, so no duty surprises.

There is no duty on digital cameras and 6.7% on lenses. VAT would then be charged at 17.5% on the total including duty.
  • Yeh, they had the E-510 in St Thomas also.. Chose the panny as I have several others and am use to the interface.. plus it's a bit more beginners friendly.

The lens was only $99 on its own
