You don't legally need a licence.

The BBC like to imply you do for all of their services but you only need it if you watch TV via an aerial, freeview box, satellite or cable.
Or a variant on downloading, you also need a licence if you watch over the internet at effectively the same time as the programme is broadcast.

Had leaflets distributed in the Stalinallee Stating that the people
Had forfeited the confidence of the government And could win it back only
By redoubled efforts. Would it not be easier In that case for the government
    To dissolve the people
    And elect another?

As I understand it, it is anyone they find watching it.

I remember at Uni the TVL people flyered everywhere and there was something on the flyer about flats. From what I remember it said you need a single licence if non of the internal doors were locked with a key. However if you could lock the bedrooms with keys then you would need a licence for each room, i.e one licence per resident. If you then had a communal TV in a lounge you would need another licence. So the way I saw it if you lived in a three person flat with locks on the bedrooms you needed 4 licences  I thought it would be just easier if we never got one ;)

At my daughter's Uni, every room had a letter from TVL, reminding them to buy a TV licence. Lots of the rooms couldn't even receive a signal (very built up area).

The good thing was that because of security in the reception area, no-one was allowed into the building without clearance. The TV Licencing folk were turned away at reception and told they would need permission from each resident they intended to visit!

They send several follow-up letters throughout the year and the majority just ignore them.

Hi guys newbie here, pls forgive me if i have posted in the wrong place,,, i have a lisence, albeit black and white, in the grasp of CSA and b/w is all i can afford. Have held the lisence for 4 months now i had a phone call asking what equipment i have in my home and that they are sending an officer round to check that my tv is indeed b/w!!!! Can they do this if i already have a lisence? why do they need to check,? I work irregular shifts and my fiance' comes and stays over sometimes, we have heard horror stories about if she was to switch a set on that wasn't b/w she could be prosecuted? is this correct?
I'm not panicking , i'm just fed up that they want to come around and check when i already hold a license!!!! If i am at work and my fiance' is over does she have to answer the door? she says she would just show the lisence through the door chain!!!
    Many thanks

They are working on the assumption that no-one has a monochrome television these days and, if they say they have, they must really have a colour set and be up to no good.

    Unfortunately ...

Whilst I cannot condone what you've done, I completely understand your reasons for having to have done it.

The Capita "goons" do not have right of access to your property without a warrant.

If they decide that it is worth coming back with one, and find the colour set and the monochrome license, you will be even further up "$#!+ Street" than you are now.

I am not suggesting that you do this, but I would borrow a portable monochrome set, and then actually arrange a visit to "call their bluff".
