Funny Coloured TV picture

Hi, please can someone help, (this is my second attempt). Our TV picture has gone a greeny/grey colour. My little angel left a toy with a magnet in nearby and I think it now needs demagnetising. Anyone know how to do this? Or has anyone got any other advice (preferably that won't cost).
Thanks

Don't know what sort of TV you have. But my DS did this years ago and we ended up with purple blobs. Ours needed a new tube. In other words it knackered the TV.

Not much help to you I know. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be along shortly.

I remember putting a magnet on my parents' TV when I was a kid. Then next time it was turned on there was a big purple blotch where I'd done it. All eyes turned to me but I pleaded ignorance :-)

IIRC it faded after a while. And about 20 years later I finally owned up. Hopefully someone will be able to give some better advice. Anything that has magnets has been confiscated from my children. What with all the computers in the house I just don't want to take the risk!

As loaner says. Switch it off (properly, not just standby). Most CRT TVs have degaussing circuits built in that activate when the TV is powered on.

My TV picture went purple on Saturday and although I switched it on and off several times it did not change.
I gave up and went out shopping thinking I needed a new TV as this one is 8 years old.
Switched on when I came back and it was perfect!!!

Sometimes needs a bit of time as well, especially before degaussing.

switch it off and back on again.

And if it is really bad and that don't work, then it needs doing with a degaussing magnet which any TV repair man should have on a shelf gathering dust somewhere.

Thanks for the suggestions. We have tried leaving the TV turned off for a full night and day, but it has made no difference. Does anyone have any idea how much the TV repair man will charge? I have looked on ebay and you can buy a degaussing wand for around £4.00 + postage.

You could even build one if you really wanted. But by trying to degauss manually yourself you are risking making things actually worse.

It is easy enough to do yourself, with the TV switched on
    1. Connect the degausser to the mains supply.
    2. Hold degausser in vertical position approx: 1" From the CRT face.
    3. Press switch & slowly sweep the entire surface area of the CRT in a circular motion, slowly withdraw the degausser to approx. six feet away before releasing the switch.
You will get some fantastic colours of the rainbow while doing it and you can try several times if you do not succeed the first time.

If you do not feel confident ask for a quote from a local TV repair shop, it is only a two minute job but they will probably charge a call out.
