I set one up not so long ago to sell some DVD's from an international scout camp last year. I set-up a domain with hosting with a company offering a mysql database & then used an open source php shopping cart- I used http://www.oscommerce.com/ to setup the shop, or you could also use an open source CMS which has a shop plug-in, like http://www.e107.org (there are others available http://www.opensourcecms.com/ lists some of them
  • I tried MrSite myself but couldnt quite get along with it.....

50poundwebsite (.com I think) occassionaly runs a promotion where they will build you a site for practically nothing (£50 lol)

    Google friendly etc etc...

otherwise..... outsource it online I reckon...

A shopping cart requires users to signup at least to put items in their own basket so if you are serious about it then go for a website which support a data base either ASP or PHP. You can find scripts for shopping carts in both however if you want to program your own it will be good to have a free host.
When you say design...do you mean it as
web designing with web technologies in mind
or as a shop designer with sales in mind
Not quite true. If you use something like Roman Cart or Paypal. or Google Checkout, you need to know absolutely nothing about ASP or PHP or accounts.

Anyway Paypal is your option. You only pay fees on the stuff you sell. Set-up is completely free.
The ultimate in cheap web selling.
