Facebook- photographs- is it a good idea to put them on Facebook?

I apologise straightaway if I've posted in the wrong section. I did search all the different sections and thought this one might be the closest????

I'm just wondering what people's thoughts are regarding putting photographs on Facebook. I admit I'm a very cautious user of Facebook and have not put photos on there as I think it's not a good idea. What is the general opinion?

I would really appreciate hearing your thoughts on this.

Thank you very much.

I'm a teacher and as a result my picture is of Captain Caveman and I am VERY careful about what my friends put up picturewise and who I allow as friends (NEVER a student - past or present! If they can work out its me!!!).

Quite like it though and have got back in touch with lots if old school friends - really like sharing the old primary school class photos!

Follow the simple rule, "Would you be happy for the whole world to see the photo?", if yes put it on, otherwise leave it off.

Facebook is not private, put a photo on and you may think only your select friends can see it, but if a photo has your friend in it as well then all their friends could see it. Also when you add applications to your profile then you're giving permission to the app owner to access your data, now this probably won't include photos but you've given the permission so it could change to include photos in future.

Also keep you're personal detail profile to a minimum, I was a bit shocked at what some people have put on their profiles, someone I didn't know local to me wanted to add me to there profile, I added them temporary incase it was an old school pal, turn out it wasn't but I was surprise what details she'd put on her profile, address, home+mobile phone number, DoB etc... wouldn't say it was a wise move

Just remember that anything you upload today including photo's can be around for your lifetime online even if you remove the info due to archive searches etc. Usually suggest you don;t upload anything too risky unless you want it to bite you 10 years from now.
  • There was a story in a paper this week about a mayor who had photos of him on a night out put on facebook. There were then calls for him to resign. Obviously this probably won't be the same for everyone, I personally don't care what goes on facebook, he was in a position of authority and was actually mayor when the photos were taken

That story is not to get a moral of "don't put your photo on facebook"..The moral of the story is "do not do things that will make you embarrass in front of someone ..." or if you want it lightly
Before doing anything stupid think of CCTVs and cameras...and now facebook...

There are no photos of me - as my ID photo I have included a picture of a delphinium that was in my mum's garden last year:D

I won't put any pics on facebook at all because I hate having my picture taken and my scowling always breaks the camera:rotfl:

Make sure all your Privacy Settings are at their maximum, so only your friends can see photos.

As others have said, don't upload anything that make come back to haunt you later.

Finally, copyright on Facebook is a nightmare, people steal others' photos all the time, so if you have high quality photos, or photos you want to protect their copyright, either heavily watermark them, or don't upload them to FB in the first place.

Personally I don't have a photo of me as my profile pic, just an object as per Horace mentions above, that way, no "non-friends" or "friends-of-friends" can see details at all.

You can also enforce stricter security about searches and profile pictures appearing in the Privacy Settings.

Mine's also locked down to friends only.....and my picture is a Wee-Mee representation :D

I can't believe how naive some people are by placing all their private and official information for all to see. They are just asking to have their identity stolen.

I use Photobucket to post pictures for family and friends to see, sent them log-in details and they can look or download from the site.
