Noisy Tap? Any advice

Please can anyone help!
My sister is getting v. upset about this:
when you turn the cold water tap on in the bathroom, it emits a high pitched squeal that varies with the volume of water but stops when tap is fully on!
No vibrations or banging just a squeal.

Anyone know how to cure this?

  • It's more than likley just the tap washer that needs replacing.

Or you could just replace the whole valve assembly (the brass bit show in pic 6 ) ...B&Q & the likes have these for a few quid.

    Water pressure from the mains.
Try turning your main stop-c0ck down a few turns.
  • You can’t reduce water pressure by closing a Stop c0ck a few turns.
You will reduce the flow rate by doing this but as soon as the tap is closed the pressure will equalise on both sides of the Stop c0ck.

This may stop the noise from the tap, however you may notice an initial surge of water when you first open a tap, then the water may slow down as the Stop c0ck will be holding the flow back, you may also notice a lot of noise in the cold water pipe work, this will be caused by the water trying to flow through the ½ closed Stop c0ck.

Always best to fix the problem at the source. ;)

  • You may need to install mini expansion vessel and double-check valve into the mains just after the stopcock (check valve closest to the stopcock). If the pressure is so high that it needs reducing, it should be done with a Caleffi pressure reducing valve that can be adjusted to give a suitable pressure.
