AVG 8 says not enough memory to update

I have just tried to install an update for AVG 8 for the first time and it unexpectedly closed my browser, and came up with a message saying I don't have enough disk space or memory (not sure now but one of those two) to update.
I have checked my hard drive and I have 4g free space so it shouldn't be an issue. Should I just move to another AV? If so what would people suggest.
- It needs to be free
- It needs to be light on resources
- Preferably no annoying pop ups. AVG 7.5 was bad for this. Avast annoys me more, because the pop-ups speak.
- Preferably a non-animated tray icon.
- Don't need email scanner.
- Can disable or does not offer scheduled scanning.
- Preferably don't want 4 different programs - one for spyware and one for viruses should be plenty! One which does both would be a bonus, as long as it didn't hog resources.

I don't believe and I never did that two wrongs make a right
