vYseyboy has got it exactly correct, it was the top end Medion circa 2005 with the card as described.

I took it to a guy who replaced the PSU as I watched and it was exactly the same. Actually when you pressed the power on the main fan 'kicked' momentarily.

The fault was indeed the fan on the video card which had failed and cooked the unit - the fan was full of dust and very stiff to spin by hand. The card certainly does put out a lot of heat judging by the big circular heat sink surrounding the fan.

So thanks one and all for your help.

    Glad you got it sorted.

I only learned about those cards because a friend had exactly the same Medion PC, and he gave me the graphics card to fix when the fan stopped. It's a small world.

P.S. Assuming that no other damage was done (I don't think there would be,) you could probably just buy the cheapest AGP graphics card you could find (older ones go for < £5 on eBay,) and directly swap them to get the machine in working order again. The only thing that would suffer with low spec graphics cards might be 3d rendering and gaming, but if you don't do any of that, you probably wouldn't notice the difference.

Alternatively, complete removal of the old hard drive, and setting it up as a slave on the new system, will allow you to access all your old files. See here:
