After I made my previous post it occured to me that when I said:
If you can install Windows, then you can install Linux
it could be taken that I was assuming the 'technophobe' OP had installed an OS.

Actually, I was aware that there was a distinct probability that the OP had never installed an OS. I was just saying that if the OP was considering 'having a go' with an OS - then Linux is no more difficult to install than Windows.

It was in the sense of if you can - rather than if you have. Phew!

    What a clumsy sod I am. :o

Sorry, not checked this thread for a while so only just seen the latest comments. Thank you to everyone for their contributions, I genuinely appreciate everyone's advice.

Penrhyn: yes I do have a couple of USB Ports for a card reader
Jasperodus: I have never installed an OS
f1charlie: I intend to get a card reader and try Fastone (as a few people have suggested) as my first option. I don't have any spare cash to get a new computer at the moment. As you rightly pointed out, this is a moneysaving forum and every penny DOES literally count! (In my case anyway).

Incidentally I have recently bought one of the card readers to try out but it was only £1 and has no driver, so I am struggling to get it to work (see this thread, http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1095355)

If you do decide on a 'new' computer, eBay, or rather Gumtree could be a good option. Spend up to £100 on an old Pentium 4 with at least 512mb RAM would be fine for photos and basic editing (ie not perfecing every single one on Photoshop). Keep your old monitor, keyboard and mouse if you like. Often, if it's an old brand-name computer, it may come with a Windows license (just a sticker with a serial number)(hopefully XP), allowing you to install Windows onto it, if it has been wiped.

Id really suggest a new computer. Buy a dell, they are pretty much untouchable for the cost and it will run FAR quicker than what you have now, almost certainly look better with their monitor and the hard drive will be substantially bigger too
