I am currently with Scottishpower. When looking through my bill, i realise that I am being charged 20.810p per day. This is a huge sum, i.e. £6 a month. Does this happen to everyone?

No, you can always swap to a No Standing charge tariff. They recover the standing charge by charging more for a given number of units/month.
If you are a low user you might want to consider Ebico, no standing charge and flat rate unit charges.
That gum you like is coming back in style.
