Are these Blackcurrants?

I have what I think is a Blackcurrant bush growing in my Garden, can vaguely remember plating it a couple of years ago and according to what I've read it takes that time to first fruit. Anyway, been out there this morning and it is covered in currants that are black and look ready to pick, however, as I can't remember exactly that it's a Blackcurrant, I am a bit nervous about eating them - have picked one and cut it open and inside it's very pippy and green. Does anyone know what the inside of a Blackcurrant should look like - I have searched the Internet and my gardening books and the leaves and currants do look like Blackcurrant but the inside is making me nervous - maybe I am just picking them too early - nay help/advice would be great, thanks.

    Hi scotsaver,

My blackcurrants are ripening at the moment so I picked one to look inside and it's as you described.....green with lots of tiny little pips. Still quite bitter to taste though. :o

Have a look on google images for pictures of blackcurrant bushes to see if they look the same as yours.

My blackcurrants are nowhere near ripe yet but the foliage of the bush, when you move it to search for the fruit, smells like Ribena!:D

I too have a bush with lovely black berries that look just like blackcurrants, very dark. However, when I Googled for images of the leaf, my leaves are not like those shown (which reminded me of a bramble leaf) - my leaves are turning red. I have searched for ages, even poisonous berry sites, but can find nothing with a wee black berry! Any ideas?? (Leaves are lobed and a little serrated), opposing on stem, stems are twiggy. Berries grow in clusters and have a little thread on the botton of each berry. Also, no smell on the leaves, as you would expect from blackcurrant! Thanks :)

Thanks for these replies, I am now confident from what's been said and what I have found on the Internet that these are Blackcurrants, just need to wait a little while longer for them to be fully ripened. Then I will need to search through my cookbooks for some nice Blackcurrant recipes.;) I just love being able to pick something from the Garden, cook it and enjoy it knowing that you have grown it yourself, it's fresh, not travelled and also costs nothing.:D Hope everyone enjoys the Summer produce from their Gardens.:D

  • A nice way to have them is stewed with sugar (same weight as you have in berries) and cooled, served as a sauce with ice cream.
