No win no fee conditional fee agreements

Hi I am hoping to go through a ‘no win no fee’ claim for personal injury on behalf of my son. I have received paper work from the solicitor which includes a conditional fee agreement. It seems very scary when I read through it. I also believe that they will take out an’after the event’ insurance.
I have legal cover with my home insurance policy but they have assessed the case using their own solicitors and will not support the case.
What I would like to know is …. Are conditional fee agreements common practice and, am I likely to be handed a huge bill ?
I have listened to the solicitor and have understood the arrangement but, I am very ignorant of the legal process and need to ask opinions.
TIA
