Places like the NEC can have extortionate parking fees for 'free ticket' events - £10/car is a normal rate, but NEC can & do change parking prices per event.

This should really be mentioned alongside the 'free' enticement.

Why is only England mentioned in the weekly email dated 31st August?

There are 3 other countries in the UK offering Heritage free visits in September.

    Why stop there?

    What about European Heritage?
    From the English Heritage website...
European Heritage Days are held annually in September in 50 countries from the Baltic to the Balkans, from Iceland to the Iberian Peninsular, highlighting not only the dazzling diversity of Europe’s heritage, but also its intercultural links.

Dinosaur Isle in Sandown on the Isle of Wight have a free entry day on Sat 12th November ONLY.
There is an event being held called Blast from the Past and lots of extra exhibitors will be there.
The event opens at 10.00 am and last admissions will be at 3.00pm.
The car park is free also.
A fossil walk is being held at 9.00am and there is a charge of £4.50 per adult and £2.50 per child for this. Booking and payment must be made in advance of the day by phone or by calling in.
This is a small museum so may not justify a trip from the mainland unless you are a dinosaur enthusiast !

  • Can search for walks, print maps (ordnance survey) and add your own walks on the Walk4Life website.

Great fun to draw your own walks - I was amazed to find out my walk to work is nearly 2 miles! And our walk to school is 0.7 miles each way - it soon adds up (the website keeps a running total of how many miles you've walked).

And it's all free - go to walk4life.info
  • Ex Cathedra is offering best available tickets for its next concert at just £10 each. Tickets worth up to £35 are available.

Birmingham's world-class choir is performing music by the composer Alec Roth, with some texts written by the best-selling author Vikram Seth.

The concert (Sun 20 Nov, 4pm - Town Hall, Birmingham) takes its title, 'The Rivered Earth', from Seth's new book and includes Shared Ground, a series of six poems published in the book, inspired by the poetry of George Herbert in whose house Seth now lives. These poems were commissioned by the Salisbury, Chelsea and Lichfield festivals in 2007 as libretti for the composer Alec Roth. The book and CD were reviewed on BBC2's The Review Show last week. Ex Cathedra was invited to give the premiere performances and have since developed a close relationship with the composer.

In 2010, Ex Cathedra and director Jeffrey Skidmore commissioned Roth to write a 40-part piece, Earthrise, to celebrate its 40th anniversary. Roth's piece is a triumph, inspired by the first image of Earth since from space.

This interest in Earth (or Gaia) continues in the third and final piece in the concert, a world premiere. Hymn to Gaia is a piece for adult choir, children's choir, bass drum, conch shell and, er, rose petals.

The music is strong, tuneful and accessible. You can try before you buy at excathedra.co.uk/rec_shared_ground.php.

To get concert tickets for just £10, call the THSH Box office on 0121 780 3333 and quote 'choir offer', or book online at excathedra.co.uk and enter the word 'choir' as the promotional code.

Please note there is a £2 fee per transaction, except for those made in person at the Town Hall and Symphony Hall box offices.
