Cheap flights to Florida

I want to fly to Florida for a month in August from 4th- 3rd sept. I'm going to be staying in Gainesville, only a flight is needed. It doesn't matter how long it takes to get there but I want to try and do it as cheap as possible. Has anyone got any ideas for alternative airports to fly to? For me to fly to Gainesville it costs £779 and Orlando (MCO) is £750ish.
Is it cheaper to fly to NY and then get a separate flight in the USA?
Also the closer it gets to my departure date do flight costs usually increase or decrease?
