How to make games work on Vista?

My hubby has just bought a PC game for the computer (without me knowing so paid FAR to much for it!) but didn't realise it needs Windows 2000 or XP to run! We currently have Vista and can't make it work (it simply won't run). Is there any way to make the game work? Please help but bear in mind I'm not techie-minded so please speak s-l-o-w-l-y!!!:D

Really depends on the game, but most should work with a few tweaks.
Firstly, which game is it? Some developers release an update to the game to allow it to work on Vista.
Otherwise, try running the game in windows XP compatiblity mode.

Find the real .exe (rather than the desktop shortcut... ). This is the file that starts the appliacation and will be in something like:
c:\program files\game manufacturer\game\gamename.exe
Right click on the .exe file and click properties. There is an option in one of the tabs to run in XP mode.
Try that

Thanks for the replies - had a go at both options but doesn't seem to have any effect. When I put the game in I get a pop up window asking whether I want to run the game so I click on allow but then nothing happens. Same when trying to run it using windows XP compatiblity mode. The game is "Brothers in Arms - Earned in Blood" if that helps at all?!!May the fleas of a thousand camels infest the crotch of the person who screws up your day and may their arms be too short to scratch...:D0

This game uses starforce copy protection which will not work under Vista. As starforce cannot be completely removed from an exe, the game will not work until ubisoft publishes a patch that removes starforce completely.
Found the above on a forum[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]"The internet is a great way to get on the net."

You should be able to install using compat mode.[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]"The internet is a great way to get on the net."

Thanks again. The forum says the following...
"Right click the game exe then goto properties then compatibility mode and run it as Windows XP SP2"
How and where do I find the game exe to right click on?!! Sorry for being dense but not sure where to go!May the fleas of a thousand camels infest the crotch of the person who screws up your day and may their arms be too short to scratch...:D0
