AOL new b/band network-must I get a new PC??

Hi all

My partner had an email from AOL saying it was moving customers to its new network & she would need to replace her modem with a new wireless one that they sent her.
So far so good. However, when I went to install the CD it said there was only 1MB of memory & it needed 4MB. The hard drive has plenty of room so can someone tell me how to increase the memory it's referring to?

Also, she needs to get a USB to ethernet port adapter, which I believe are about £20.

If I can't increase the memory by altering the current settings, is it worth buying the adapter and having the memory increased by buying extra memory (I don't know how much this will cost) or is it more cost effective to buy a new PC?

If it's relevant, it's not essential that she has the broadband wirelessly as the PC is only in one place.

Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks

Si

A friend of mine is with AOL (I packed them in) but still uses his USB modem with no problems -- They changed their network but you can still access it even with a dial-up modem --- You don't indicate if yor PC has an Ethernet socket -- if so the modem/router they sent should just plug into that -- Dave

You don't give any details of your partner's PC, i.e. What operating system, Windows 98/XP/Vista. Amount of RAM in the PC and the size of the harddrive.
What are you trying to install? Normally you just connect the router to your PC input your username/password and off you go.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

When we joined AOL we had to use our old router, and it worked fine. The only change for AOLs new server, IIRC, is a change of username from username@aol.co.uk to username@dialbb.com. As loaner says, you change these in your dial-up settings (for modem) or setup page (for router). My setup page is at 192.168.0.0 - yours could be too.
Life should be a little nuts; otherwise it's just a bunch of Thursdays strung together.
