Places to stay for 1-2 nights in France?

Hi, I'm a regular browser, but not so regular a post-er, so here goes!
I'm planning a holiday in France for the summer, and have got a week booked at a friend's place in the south for 7 nights, but we'd like to travel down slowly, taking a night or 2 at different places on the way there & back.
Has anyone got any tips on reasonably priced places to stay? Or ways of staying at really nice places cheaply?!?
So far, I've been through all my Tesco/Nectar points vouchers and found nothing useful for 1 night. Youth hostels may be an option, but I haven't done them in 20 years so I'm not sure how family-friendly they are these days? I've found a variety of hotels, range from £50 upwards per night, which adds a fair bit over 8 nights.
Would love to have a go at camping, but am a bit worried about how much extra 'stuff' that would add to the car, plus am meeting some major resistance from my husband who isn't at all sure about the communal toilet thing ...
Has anyone got any ideas?
Thanks

Hello
We often do this so have a few decent addresses for family B&B accommodation. Really depends where in the south you are going/which route you take as to locations of places to recommend! If you could tell me where you are heading in the south and I'll post the links;)0 -

We normally travel to the south of france and rather than rush down there, we tend to stay in chambre d'hotes on route. you can find places to stay on route from gites d'france and we try to find a B & B which also does an evening meal. That way you enjoy typical french cuisine which tends to be eaten with the family. There is not normally a choice, so if you are picky, not to be advised. The meals normally consist of starter, main course, cheese or and dessert and occassionally coffee. Sometimes an aperitif is served and almost always the meal is accompanied by wine. The cost varies, but the ones I have looked at this year seem to be around 22 euros each. It also means that you do not have to worry about driving if you enjoy a glass of wine as all you do is toddle off to bed afterwards.
We have toured France using this method and have stayed in some lovely places and enjoyed some wonderful meals.0
