Changing halogen light bulb...help!!

All my lights fused last night. I went into the cellar and pushed up the bar that was down on the control panel. It was then clear that one of the bulbs in my bedroom had blown. (Definitely not changed since 1998 so good going!)

Quite pleased with myself because I googled how to remove it (the sort of kirby grip affair) and then put in a new bulb.

Sadly I can't get it to work and I also can't figure out if the grip is put back before or after the bulb.

I have a good friend who is an electrician, but my womanly pride wants to at least have a go at sorting it out.

Any ideas gratefully received! Thanks
