UK Motor home Holidays ? which direction

Hi guys,

I am looking at hiring a motor home for a week at the end of the month to go to a couple of place around the UK.
Has anyone ever hired a motor home?
There are 2 adults and an 8month old baby, would you advise getting a motor home.

I am just looking for a few pointers in the right direction of good places to hire from and places to go.

Thanks

JOE

We have one - not a posh one - bit like a VW camper.

Advising is really difficult as I would rather use the rental to buy a good set of camping equipment which you can use over and over.

The problem with motorhome - the big ones not the small ones like we have - is the fact that if you want to go anywhere you have to take the home with you. A lot of car parks don;t take homes that size so you get a bit stuck. With camping you just leave the site set up and take your car into town, or whatever.

If you want to be sure of a warm and dry night sleep while camping look for camp sites with camping pods.....they are little wooden sleeping shelters but you still cook out etc so you know you'll all sleep in dry conditions even though you are sort of camping.

We have hired a couple of big ones in Canada and USA. Agree with Kez100 about taking everything with you but love the freedom it gives with young children in tow. Would suggest only hiring something that is adequate for your needs. We had 30' one last time and it was quite large especially when you get to a supermarket car park. Had this size as we wanted 2 full size double beds and this was the smallest on offer.
  • Would I have to park it in campsites of a night?
How secure are they while you sleep?

Not sure if you can park in a layby in Scotland but think you would have to use a campsite in England/Wales. Have never encountered any problems with security whilst sleeping although I always keep the windows closed at night, just have rooflights open if it is hot.
