New Flat Screen Monitor - setting resolution

I've got a new Cibox 19'' wide aspect monitor. I know it has a top resolution of 1440 x 900 because I set it up with that when first connecting it. However this was done when the output display was defaulting to the 1:1.33 ratio initially. I can't remember what I did to widen the aspect ratio when it offered me the top resolution option.

The reason it's changed now is that I've had to reinstal my OS from scratch today..

Anyway, now I've got the option only of varying screen resolution from the 'properties' option from the desk top right click (it's XP in case you need to ask!) which only offers a range of settings on the slide bar up to 1280/768 - which is what I'm on now.

Any suggestions as to how to get back the previous resolution?

Thanks

I'm going beyond the boundaries of my knowledge here...

... but from what you've described it sounds like you need to re-install your graphics drivers. You say you've reinstalled your OS so I'm guessing you've 'wiped the slate clean' so to speak. So I'm further guessing you're running on the built in Windows drivers, which don't offer you that resolution.

Next question, how do I re-install my graphics drivers? Don't know I'm afraid! But I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than I can help you with that one. I've a couple of ideas of where to go next but I don't want to lead you up any garden paths (if I've not already done so!)

Go to the website of the maker of the graphics card and download the latest drivers.

I realise this thread is a couple of months old but I've got a friend with a similar sounding problem so thought this was a good place to ask. The graphics drivers have not been changed but only support up to 1024 x 768 and the recently purchased new monitor recommends 1440 x 900. Where will she find new drivers - should they be on the CD that came with the new monitor? If not, where else? Or is likely that that the PC just cannot support the recommended resolution without a new graphics card? Any advice appreciated.
  • Control Panel > System > Hardware tab > Device Manager > expand Display Adapters , go to relevant manufacturer website and download graphics driver.

Exactly! Try new drivers, reduce the colour depth from 32 to 24 then 16 to see if that helps, if not then its UPGRADE time, BTW the display will look carp until you have done this.
